Dr. Julian Carlo

Upper Extremity Orthopedic Specialist

Julian Carlo is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon whose goal is to take the best possible care of patients. He specializes in the treatment of conditions of the hand and upper extremity.  He is a Vestavia Hills native who is proud to be back home serving his community.

Julian has been fortunate to train with leaders in the field of orthopedics and hand surgery. His desire is to transmit his training and experience into improving patients’ lives. Patients know him for his pleasant beside manner, care taken to make sure patients understand their conditions, and a thoughtful patient-centered approach to solving their musculoskeletal problems that exhausts conservative measures.

Julian’s interest in orthopedics developed through an atypical route.  As an undergraduate at Harvard College planning to go to medical school, he decided to satisfy an in intellectual urge and majored in biological anthropology.  His coursework studying human origins sparked an interest in human musculoskeletal anatomy seen through an evolutionary lens. He carried this interest through Harvard Medical School, where he decided to unite his interest in musculoskeletal anatomy with surgery to pursue a career in orthopedic surgery. For someone with an anthropology background, there was arguably nothing more uniquely human than the human hand.  He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Iowa, and hand surgery fellowship at the University of Florida before returning home in 2014 to begin practicing.

He lives in Vestavia Hills with his wife and two young sons. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his sons, playing games, sports, or fishing.  Whenever he gets the chance he would like to be traveling and kitesurfing.
